The Very Disorganised Mummy

The Very Disorganised Mummy

You know there are so many organised mums out there – Nicole from Planning with Kids, Katrina from the Organised Housewife, just to name a few. I am totally opposite of them. I don’t plan, because each time I do, something seems to happen. I don’t do lists, because each time I have them, nothing seems to happen. And those who know me well enough, knows that I usually leave things to the last minute.

Take for example Master 5′s coming birthday party. After having scoured the Internet for ideas and especially those that DO NOT include having it at home where I would have to have a major clean up, I decided – Mini Golf Party. The price was – yes pretty reasonable considering the activity they were going to have – one round of mini golf and the food – while they’re the standard party food, was a lot more than what I would get had I chosen a bowling party.

Having booked the party some time last week – this was after my husband had reminded me so many times to book it; it was now time to hand out the invitations. The mini golf place did provide invitations, but being the lazy ass busy person I was, I decided to do my own invitations. Guess when I did it? This morning. And when’s the party again – next Saturday. Great timing huh? Well, at least I got the invitations out and everyone has the end of this week to RSVP. My rationale is – people won’t forget because it’s pretty close to the date and I would have Monday to hound those who have not RSVPed. Let’s see how this all pans out. Thank goodness I only have to plan the cake now! Yet another thing to do my research on. So if you’ve got anywhere that you know that sells cupcake toppers (yes, I’ve settled on cupcakes) that has the Star Wars theme on it, please do let me know.

Tea Party Activities

This is still a favourite amongst girls between the ages of 7 – 10, but you can make it more exciting by using the Alice In Wonderland theme. Your invitations could either state each child to come dressed as a character you have picked from the story or they could make that choice themselves. It all depends on how pedantic you really are about doubling up, but seriously, it doesn’t matter, there can be as many Alice in the party even. It’s all about having fun.

Games & Activities

  • Decorating Cupcakes – Make your cupcakes before hand. Have some cake decorations, for instance, chocolate icing, plain icing, sprinkles, Smarties, chocolate chips for the kids to decorate with.  Make sure you have a few bowls of icing for a few of them to ice their cupcakes with. Once done, they can proceed to the next activity. Meanwhile, you can place the decorated cupcakes on a stand and use that as a birthday (cup)cake at the end.
  • Croquet – Alice in Wonderland style of course! There are croquet sets out there or a wooden one from Just Us Kids Online.
  • Catch that rabbit! – This is a game I came with myself. Basically a treasure hunt. You might need some little toy rabbits (I think you might be able to find some in $2 shops) or you can make some from cardboard with some sort of stand. Depending on the number of kids you have – if large number, then divide them into groups, if only a handful, give each child a sheet of clues. The treasures are hidden with each rabbit. Each group/child are given a list of things to collect, making sure you don’t double up on each list of course. Each time they get to the hidden spot, they not only have to collect the treasure but also the rabbit. And all as quickly as they can. Once they do, the first team/child to finish will get a major prize (the choice is yours). The treasures found within each group or by the child is theirs to keep. That presents as part of their loot bag. Ideas for treasures can include lollies, stationery, games and lip gloss.
  • After the “Catch the Rabbit” treasure hunt, the kids can then have their party food.
  • While they are having their refreshments, use this time to set up the next game – Pin the heart on the Queen. You can either draw your own Queen and buy heart stickers for the kids to pin on while being blindfolded, or you can try and find an image on the Internet of the Queen of Hearts to print out.  The winner is the one that pins the heart on the left side of the Queen’s chest. You can choose to give the one who did not win some small prize or just one prize for the winner. It’s up to you. By this age, they are usually used to the idea of “not everyone wins”.
  • After that it’s time for the birthday cupcakes with each kid taking their own decorated cupcake. Then it’s loot bag time and home time.

Cooking Party

Need I say more? Well, this is much better in a smaller group and suitable for both girls and boys. You can purchase some aprons from the $2 shops and these can be given as gifts to the kids. Iron-on each kid’s initial to personalise the gift. Below are a range of ideas on what you can cook with the kids.

  • Mini Pizzas – Have a range of toppings, and you can either make the base yourself or buy pre-made mini pizzas for each child to decorate.
  • Sausage rolls- Have some do the mixing, some do the rolling and some brush the egg and sprinkle the top with sesame seeds.
  • Fruit Kebabs – Get a few kids to thread the fruits on satay sticks.
  • Mini muffins – These are quick and easy to make. Try making berry, banana or chocolate chip ones. I’ll share some recipes with you in our next post.

Once they food is ready, the kids will be delighted with the feast that they have prepared! Lolly bags can include mini whisks, mini wooden spoons and a small writing pad and pencil for jotting down future recipes.

The Art of Gift Giving

The Art of Gift Giving

Schools in Australia are now in Term 2 and from the looks of it, a lot of birthdays come up around this time. Parties are also in abundance and with it comes the job of buying gifts. It can be pretty hard for some to decide what to get a child. Do you ask the parents what to get their kids? Or do you just follow your own instincts? Here are some tips on how to choose a birthday gift for a child’s party and I’m talking about school aged children:

  • Set a budget – Depending on the type of party, I normally spend not more than $20 on a present. If the party is held at somewhere that cost the parents a lot, then I would increase it a little bit.
  • Age wise – for girls I like to get them crafty items. Sports stuff for boys or girls depending on the child.
  • Science and exploration items as gifts are also great. This is the age where they are beginning to wonder about A LOT of things, so why not give them a gift that would challenge an enquiring mind.
  • Books are also a great idea for both boys or girls. You would have to find out however , what reading level is appropriate for the child’s age.
  • Sometimes, it’s good to let YOUR child choose the present especially since they usually know the birthday child’s likes and dislikes. But, keep it within the budget. And this is also a great way to teach your child about being a  giving person.
  • For school aged children, I like  to get , my kids to make the cards instead of buying one. It makes it more personalised. Or if your child is not a fan of making cards or drawing, buy a blank card and get them to at least write their name in there.

These are only a few tips, but I’m sure there’s more out there. So share them with us!
