Today we celebrated Master 5′s birthday – so yes, he’s officially Master 6 now and as promised, we had a big birthday party for him this year. This is Master 6′s (feels weird writing that!) first ever “proper” birthday celebration. We passed up last year, when he wanted to have just the boys from his kinder class for his party. I knew then that the parents in his kinder class would normally just drop their boys off at parties and pick up after…so the thought of having about 10 boys all in my house, and having me handle them all by myself sort of put that idea off and we decided to have one when Master 6 was in prep instead. This time, we invited the whole class because yes, it’ll probably be the last time he gets to invite the whole class! We know that the girls and boys in his class played really well together, there were no such things as boy or girl germs – yet, so I thought it would be nice to have them all for his party. Having looked at so many options I decided to have his party at a Mini Golf Adventure Park. First – they serve quite a lot of food, and we know kids do well when they have food. Secondly, they provide everything – the entertainment (mini golf), the lolly bags (and it wasn’t a pathetic crappy one either) and I don’t have to clean up! The kids had fun playing albeit it being a pretty hot day in Melbourne – 30 degrees! And what mattered was Master 6 was happy to have his friends there.
Next was the cake – I knew I wanted to make cupcakes because they are just so much easier to handle and give out. So I searched around for the best recipe and by best I mean quick, easy and yummy. I received Annabel Langbein‘s new cookbook – Free Range in the City a week before and saw that she had a One Pot Chocolate and Raspberry Cupcakes recipe. It looked pretty easy to make so I thought, why not. And I did…and…it WAS EASY! Instead of raspberries though I used blueberries because that was what I had in the freezer. I skipped making the frosting from scratch and opted for our dear Betty Crocker instead for that. Gotta love something that cuts my cake decorating time! The cupcakes were surprisingly moist and delicious – I know because, I HAD to test them before dishing them out to everyone else. *Stay tuned for my post on hosting a party (for adults) from Annabel’s new recipe book!
Then came the theme of the cake. Master 6 had specifically told me he wanted a Star Wars theme for his cake. I searched online for any edible cupcake toppers or even the ones that aren’t edible. But, being the last minute person I was – I left it until Wednesday and the birthday was today, I knew they wouldn’t arrive in time for his party. Then I thought of making some toppers myself. All I had to do was find the right image, print them and get my girls to do the cutting. Well, the manipulation of the image became too troublesome – I couldn’t get the right circular shape and I was at my wits end. It was Friday. Thankfully my husband then suggested to use the Star Wars figurines Master 6 already had and decorate the cupcakes with them instead. Well, he actually suggested to place the cupcakes in a pyramid shape and place one of the figurines on top – he didn’t actually factor in the icing on the cupcakes. So, what did I end up with? This!
Not bad huh? Master 6 was thrilled that he did get his “Star Wars” themed cake and there was no wastage – he got to keep the toys anyway.
