Today we celebrated Master 5′s birthday – so yes, he’s officially Master 6 now and as promised, we had a big birthday party for him this year. This is Master 6′s (feels weird writing that!) first ever “proper” birthday celebration. We passed up last year, when he wanted to have just the boys from his kinder class for his party. I knew then that the parents in his kinder class would normally just drop their boys off at parties and pick up after…so the thought of having about 10 boys all in my house, and having me handle them all by myself sort of put that idea off  and we decided to have one when Master 6 was in prep instead. This time, we invited the whole class because yes, it’ll probably be the last time he gets to invite the whole class! We know that the girls and boys in his class played really well together, there were no such things as boy or girl germs – yet, so I thought it would be nice to have them all for his party. Having looked at so many options I decided to have his party at a Mini Golf Adventure Park. First – they serve quite a lot of food, and we know kids do well when they have food. Secondly, they provide everything – the entertainment (mini golf), the lolly bags (and it wasn’t a pathetic crappy one either) and I don’t have to clean up! The kids had fun playing albeit it being a pretty hot day in Melbourne – 30 degrees! And what mattered was Master 6 was happy to have his friends there.

Next was the cake – I knew I wanted to make cupcakes because they are just so much easier to handle and give out. So I searched around for the best recipe and by best I mean quick, easy and yummy. I received Annabel Langbein‘s new cookbook – Free Range in the City a week before and saw that she had a One Pot Chocolate and Raspberry Cupcakes recipe. It looked pretty easy to make so I thought, why not. And I did…and…it WAS EASY! Instead of raspberries though I used blueberries because that was what I had in the freezer. I skipped making the frosting from scratch and opted for our dear Betty Crocker instead for that. Gotta love something that cuts my cake decorating time! The cupcakes were surprisingly moist and delicious – I know because, I HAD to test them before dishing them out to everyone else. *Stay tuned for my post on hosting a party (for adults) from Annabel’s new recipe book!

Then came the theme of the cake. Master 6 had specifically told me he wanted a Star Wars theme for his cake. I searched online for any edible cupcake toppers or even the ones that aren’t edible. But, being the last minute person I was – I left it until Wednesday and the birthday was today, I knew they wouldn’t arrive in time for his party. Then I thought of making some toppers myself. All I had to do was find the right image, print them and get my girls to do the cutting. Well, the manipulation of the image became too troublesome – I couldn’t get the right circular shape and I was at my wits end. It was Friday. Thankfully my husband then suggested to use the Star Wars figurines Master 6 already had and decorate the cupcakes with them instead. Well, he actually suggested to place the cupcakes in a pyramid shape and place one of the figurines on top – he didn’t actually factor in the icing on the cupcakes. So, what did I end up with? This!

The Final Result! Cupcakes with Star Wars figurines.

Not bad huh? Master 6 was thrilled that he did get his “Star Wars” themed cake and there was no wastage – he got to keep the toys anyway.

A Spooky Halloween Party

A Spooky Halloween Party

We don’t celebrate Halloween, and I don’t believe in going to strangers’ houses to beg for candy…ok, honestly, too lazy to dress up and go out to do that. See…at least I’m honest. I don’t really care if it’s considered an American tradition, or if it’s too commercialised, and all that jazz. For me, if you do choose to celebrate it, it’s HOW you do it. So like any other tradition and culture that has been a part of Australia or been introduced recently, I’ve decided to embrace it in a fun way – just like Christmas which is supposed to be a Christian festivity – but we still celebrate that, just not the religious part of it. Anyway…if you do want to read more about Halloween and find out the ACTUAL origins, you can read it here.

Back to the story at hand…so this year, I thought, you know what, let’s just do this. Let’s just have our own Halloween party. No, not having to decorate the house up or go trick or treating – told you…too lazy. Instead I made it into a movie night with the kids and we dressed up in whatever characters we wanted to be. Didn’t need to be a scary character, it’s just about…HAVING FUN! I was surprised that even Mr. C got in on it!! Seeing that Halloween falls on a Monday and that’s also Mr. C’s birthday, I decided to have our Halloween party on Saturday – yesterday. The kids cleaned up the living room – something that seldom happens unless you say you’re having a party! And here’s what each of us dressed up as:

Miss 8 – the Monster High doll, Draculaura (yes no fangs sorry)

Draculaura
Miss 9 – the Monster High doll, Laguna Blue (no blue paint but she had the freckles down pat!)

Laguna Blue

Master 5; the Star Wars obsessed fan as….Anikin, complete with his light saber!

Anikin Skywalker

Mr. C – as The Fonz! He had to show the kids who The Fonz was online!

The Fonz

And me as….Padme – for those of you who are not too sure who she is, well, she’s Princess Leia’s mum from the Star Wars Prequel.

Even the kids’ “puppies” got dressed up!

We had an early dinner and for some snacks we had – Darrell Lea Choc Mint Balls, Choc Orange Balls and Milk & Dark Choc Coated Peanuts – YUM!! I loved that these 500g tubs came with a scooper inside – ideal not just for those who do celebrate Halloween and have trick or treaters coming to their door, but for any kind of party really! No icky hands dipping into the buckets! And I also love the fact that now they’re readily available in Big W, just in case there’s no Darrell Lea stores near you.

And for some light entertainment: Spooky Buddies! A movie starring Disney’s “famous” puppies – that is if you’ve watched Airbuds previously. Well, talking dogs are a hit with our kids, so I’m not complaining, and as far as “scary” movies go when you’ve got kids, we can only watch those that are actually movies for kids. So Spooky Buddies it was. Starring 5 cute “talking” puppies, this time, they’re on a scary adventure to try and get rid of the evil Warwick the Warlock and the “Halloween Howl”, the evil dog that steals the souls of dogs from the same bloodline. The pups and their owners have to stop these two evil beings so that the souls from the nether world do not come back and take over the town and in turn – the world! My kids weren’t scared at the “scary” bits, but I would warn though that some images of the Halloween dress ups might scare some children. There were some funny, laughable bits for the adults too, which is great. And yes, I was surprisingly sitting through the whole movie wanting to know what happened at the end.

The kids had a great night, and so did Mr. C and I. It’s amazing how a simple set up can make everyone happy – we were all entertained, and had fun dressing up plus had yummy treats that were just in front of us. Sometimes it’s the simple things that makes things work. So, if you’re thinking of celebrating Halloween, why not give these ideas a try? You don’t have to go all out with the trick or treating, nor do you have to get into the commercialisation bit – just play on the dressing up part! I loved that bit the best!

And now, some fab news – a giveaway…I’m sure you would have expected that right? I’ve got a Disney Blu-Ray and DVD set of the Spooky Buddies (rrp$49.95) and a Spooky Buddies plush toy (rrp$14.95).

The Very Disorganised Mummy

The Very Disorganised Mummy

You know there are so many organised mums out there – Nicole from Planning with Kids, Katrina from the Organised Housewife, just to name a few. I am totally opposite of them. I don’t plan, because each time I do, something seems to happen. I don’t do lists, because each time I have them, nothing seems to happen. And those who know me well enough, knows that I usually leave things to the last minute.

Take for example Master 5′s coming birthday party. After having scoured the Internet for ideas and especially those that DO NOT include having it at home where I would have to have a major clean up, I decided – Mini Golf Party. The price was – yes pretty reasonable considering the activity they were going to have – one round of mini golf and the food – while they’re the standard party food, was a lot more than what I would get had I chosen a bowling party.

Having booked the party some time last week – this was after my husband had reminded me so many times to book it; it was now time to hand out the invitations. The mini golf place did provide invitations, but being the lazy ass busy person I was, I decided to do my own invitations. Guess when I did it? This morning. And when’s the party again – next Saturday. Great timing huh? Well, at least I got the invitations out and everyone has the end of this week to RSVP. My rationale is – people won’t forget because it’s pretty close to the date and I would have Monday to hound those who have not RSVPed. Let’s see how this all pans out. Thank goodness I only have to plan the cake now! Yet another thing to do my research on. So if you’ve got anywhere that you know that sells cupcake toppers (yes, I’ve settled on cupcakes) that has the Star Wars theme on it, please do let me know.

Tea Party & A Spring Sack Race

Tea Party & A Spring Sack Race

Remember my post from yesterday about the plans to do a few stuff before the school holiday ends. Well, I’m happy to report that we managed to do the Tea Party yesterday. The kids were excited and I think that got them going with getting ready, or else, they would have stayed in their PJs all day!

So, what was on the menu?

  • Finger Sandwiches – Cold cut chicken loaf with cucumber
  • Anzac Muffins
  • Chocolate Brownies
  • Rice Crackers with avocado dip
  • Mini cupcakes

The kids also got a very rare treat in the mix – some orange fizzy drinks. Miss 9 was thrilled to be given the task to help me decorate the breakfast benchtop.

high tea party at home

She placed some colourful placemats from MYdrap according to the person who will be seating at the spot, and for the platters, she used the square napkins. Miss 9 had a ball decorating the space especially with the range of colours and designs the placemats and napkins came in!

Using MYdrap

MYdrap

MYdrap - perforated napkins

For convenience, the MYdrap placemats and napkins came in a perforated roll for her to tear and decorate. The kids enjoyed eating the food and having me take photos of them and I think the highlight was the fizzy drink they got to have – so they savoured every drop. Because the placemats and napkins are biodegradable, I can choose to throw them out if it got really dirty, but seeing that I can wash them up to 8 times, we chucked them in the laundry instead.

Sack race

And off they go!

Sack race

Half way through, and Miss 9 is in the lead!

After our little “high tea”, we decided to have some fun outside, especially with the beautiful weather we were having. The kids decided to have a sack race and, yes, like any other thing that has a winner, there were tantrums to “liven” up the atmosphere a little bit – ahhh…what will we do without tantrums eh? Master 5 couldn’t get the hang of jumping and kept on running in the sack – so DUH! of course he fell down each time, making him come third. I guess the words – it’s not about winning, it’s about having fun didn’t apply to him that time. So we had to play several times for Master 5 to get used to the idea of JUMPING in the sack and not RUN! He eventually got the idea – a day later…hey, better late than never I guess.

Tonight I’m planning a Movie Night. Probably watching something we recorded previously, unless of course the kids get too tired after their day of craft and a playdate we had over earlier today. Stay tuned for my update tomorrow!
