Art To Spice Up An Underpass

Art To Spice Up An Underpass

How many of us have seen some unsightly graffiti at our local or even not so local train stations? I remember the last time my late grandmother came to visit, she was surprised at the numerous graffiti that “decorated” the walls outside of train stations, some shop walls and sometimes even the neighbourhood brick fences. I wasn’t so surprised, and at times, there is the odd graffiti that actually did look good, pity it wasn’t something that was commissioned. For someone who came from Singapore, especially someone like my grandmother who wasn’t exposed to such liberal fancies, it would be a total culture shock. If you haven’t been there, let me explain why. It’s CLEAN – as in STERILE clean. While that can be good in a way, sometimes I think it is a tad bit too sterile.

One station in Melbourne has decided to make a change to all the unsightly graffiti that we see around the train station areas. If you ever got the chance to check out the underpass over at Bentleigh’s Patterson station, be sure to stop and actually take in all the lovely colours and textures that adorn the walls. Thanks to local artist and mosaic expert, Pamela Irving, Bostik and more than 750 local and international community groups, the underpass is now decorated with beautiful, artistic and colourful mosaic creations. If you looked closely, you might even spot a few celeb faces on the mural! There’s Barack Obama, Julia Gillard and you wouldn’t be able to miss the Luna Park face amongst the 550 creations.

Stationary Faces over at Patterson Station

Stationary Faces over at Patterson Station

The mural named, “Stationary Faces”, that took around 18 months to create, was revealed last Sunday, the 4th March 2012. At the “revealing” ceremony, The Zamponistas graced the ceremony with lovely folk style music, blowing their wooden flutes (I’m sure there’s a more technical name for it) and banging their drums in their colourful costumes to match the colourful mural. Even they had a hand in creating some of the mosaics that were featured on the wall!

I thought this was a great idea not only to spruce up an otherwise dull environment but a great way for the community to band and work together to beautify their area. Maybe other areas in Melbourne could do the same, not necessarily with mosaics, but even graffiti can look beautiful when done nicely and not just random tags. A great way to keep young fingers and hands busy doing a good thing!

Join Kirsty from Mummy to Five and Alyce from Blossom Heart Blog each week on Tuesdays where we share the things we’ve made that we found via Pinterest.

I’m not huge at pinning on Pinterest, you can see for yourself on my Pinterest boards. While I’ve got some stuff on my boards…you would be hard pressed to find me sitting there and pinning all the time. In most cases I usually re-pin other people’s pins, and most of what I pin are either food, fashion or beauty. But, besides pinning things I like, I’ve also pinned some ideas I might like to explore in the future. Stuff like organising, craft and even hair styling ideas (although I haven’t got many of that yet).

The end of term is drawing near and I’ve been looking through some ideas on what to get or make for the kids’ teachers. There’s been quite a number of Keep Calm signs around and I do love this idea:

It makes a simple yet great gift for a teacher don’t you think? So instead of copying the design to a tee, I decided to re-create it with a different image and colours. Here’s mine:

Keep Calm & Teach On

I re-created this pin a few weeks ago and have yet to print it. I might venture into Ikea for a plain frame and maybe decorating it. You would have to wait until then to see the final result.

Stay tuned for next week’s Pinterest Make Me Challenge where I share with you my final results in organising my bathroom vanity and my drawers.

Trinkets On Tuesday

Trinkets On Tuesday

The Trinkets On Tuesday is a link up started up by Naomi of Diva Mum. It started last Tuesday, but I missed out because I had too much on plus, I wasn’t feeling 100% last week too. I’ve always loved jewellery and I think it’s thanks to my Mum’s influence. If you could only see her jewellery collection! Funnily enough I used to NOT like what she had in her collection. It wasn’t until I was much older, and went through her stuff that I found she had some pretty groovy pieces. All bold and big pieces, but very stunning nonetheless. My paternal grandmother also have some very nice pieces. Hers are all real jewellery and stones of course, not like my Mum’s a mixture of costume and real jewellery. My favourite piece out of my grandma’s collection is her ruby ring encrusted with diamonds. It’s a rectangular piece of ruby which are surrounded by little diamonds, that form a frame around the ruby. GORGEOUS!

My love for jewellery and accessories is evident in the fact that I even run my own accessories store – online of course. That’s where I get to purchase for my store, and if there are pieces I love too much, then one for myself too! It’s beauty meets decadence for me. So, that’s why I thought I’d join in on Naomi’s Trinkets On Tuesday. Even though I have my own store, I still buy some fashion jewellery for myself from other stores, especially if they’re on sale. I have so many favourite pieces, so I thought the first one I should share is this one I made myself from the clay beads that were given to me by Kim from Frog Ponds Rock. I finally made them into a necklace. A simple necklace on a thin leather cord.

Clay beads from Frog Ponds RockI thought I’d let the beads “speak” for itself by leaving it simple, besides, I’m not very good at jewellery making, only buying and selling! ;)
