Yes, the school holidays are here again. For some, it’s a blessing from all that rushing and running around we have to do during school days. For others, it’s a hair tearing, experience having to think of activities to do with or for the children to do. Well, with careful planning and thinking ahead, that can be solved easily.
One of the things is to find out what activities your local library might have. They usually have some fun filled actiivites planned for the holidays. And getting them ready to go there takes almost half you day already! There are also other free activities that the big shopping centres might have. Check online or ring them to find out what they have planned. Again, getting them ready and driving there would take most out of the day. Remember to bring packed lunches as these would save on the amount you wouldn’t need to spend on food when you’re there. We all know how expensive food at the food courts can be!
Other ideas, if weather permits the local playground is a fantastic idea. Pack lunches and have a simple picnic there. Even your own backyard is a good alternative. Have the kids digging weeds (that’s your gardening done) and clearing the fallen leaves…what we see as a chore is usually seen as a fun thing for the kids.
Another way to let them get in touch with nature is to let them do some flower pressing. Girls or boys can join in this fun activity. And who knows, even YOU might enjoy it too! It’s easy to do. Just pick some flowers or leaves and put it in between the two presses and leave it on for a few days. Once flattened, take the flowers/leaves and use it to decorate a page or two of the book that they can create. That leads them to the next activity – book making!
Cooking is yet another good idea. It teaches kids how to measure, mix, and create! And also appreciate the effort and time taken for YOU to cook on an everyday basis (at least we hope). Pick easy tasks for the kids to do like, measuring, sifting, mixing. Leave the baking and actual cooking to the adults. Of course they can actually stay there to watch and help clean up too!
One last idea – toy clean up! Don’t mention the word clean up or they wouldn’t want to participate. What you do is say, “let’s go through your toys together and sort through what’s good and what’s baby toys”. Now, no kid wants to be called a baby, so, that’ll encourage them to give away some toys and maybe throw some really old and broken ones away too! By saying “I need your help so that I don’t give everything away accidentaly” is another good way to get them to help you clean up their toys too!
I hope that helps in some way. I know that’s what I do with my kids. And so far it has. So, good luck and enjoy the holidays!
